Ballet - I know what you're thinking. Ballet? Whaaaaat? Well believe it or not there is much more to the art of ballet than pink everything and christmas performances. Actually ballet can and does find itself in areas that one would never think it could go. Take sports for instance. Many colleges and Pro football teams recommend and use ballet as a way for their athletes to build muscle tone, balance, focus, reflexes and develop quicker recover time from injuries. Knute Rockney and Vince Lombardi both giants in the Football universe, had team members take ballet lessons for just such reasons. Look up Lynn Swann, Herschel Walker, Ron Gronkowski, Odell Beckham Jr., just to name a few. Outside the Dallas Cowboys locker rooms they installed ballet bars to motivate the team members to stretch in different ways. Besides football, ballet is used as a cross training program for basketball, baseball, hockey, and soccer.Ballet in the engineering and programming industries. See the benefits below: * Google’s Dance Program: Google offers a variety of wellness programs for its employees, including dance classes such as ballet. These classes are designed to help employees stay active, reduce stress, and foster creativity. * Tech Professionals Taking Ballet: Many tech professionals, including software engineers and data scientists, take ballet classes in their free time. They find that the discipline and focus required in ballet help them improve their concentration and problem-solving skills at work. * Using Ballet as a Team-Building Activity: Some tech companies organize ballet workshops as team-building activities. These workshops encourage collaboration, communication, and trust among team members, which can translate to better teamwork in the workplace.

Jujitsu- Jiujitsu, is a Japanese martial art developed for the nobility of Japan back in the days of the shoguns. It was the art form that was given to the royal family of Japan as a last line of defense against invaders. It was also split up and developed into what we know today as Karate, which was given to the outside servants of the royal family (first line defense) and into Judo, which was given to the servants inside the palace (second line of defense). Like ballet, Jiujitsu, or any martial art really. has a stigma and being about fighting. On the contrary, it is about avoiding physical conflict at all cost by using problem solving techniques,, but if it gets to where a physical confrontation arises it will give you the tools needed to survive. 95% of Jiujitsu, is mental conditioning and 5% develops the physical aspect of this defensive form. Benefits of a Jiujitsu Background: * Discipline and Focus: The practice of jiujitsu requires a high level of discipline and focus, which can translate to better study habits and concentration in scientific subjects. * Problem-Solving Skills: Jiujitsu involves strategic thinking and problem-solving, as students must anticipate and counter their opponent’s moves. These skills are directly applicable to scientific inquiry and experimentation. * Physical and Mental Health: Regular physical activity, such as jiujitsu, improves overall health, which can lead to better cognitive function and academic performance. It also helps in managing stress, which is beneficial for students tackling challenging scientific concepts. * Teamwork and Collaboration: Many jiujitsu exercises and drills are performed in pairs or groups, fostering teamwork and collaboration. These skills are essential in scientific research and projects, where students often work in teams. * Cultural Awareness: Learning a traditional Japanese martial art can enhance students’ cultural awareness and appreciation, which is valuable in a globalized scientific community. * Resilience and Perseverance: Jiujitsu teaches resilience and perseverance through its rigorous training and the need to overcome physical and mental challenges. These traits are crucial for scientific research, where persistence is often required to achieve breakthroughs. So Jiujitsu will not only help develop self confidence but it will also give the students mental skills for dealing with stress as well and handle awkward or difficult situations. The combination of Ballet and Jiujitsu working along with the science training, will give the student an all around positive experience that will let them discover and view the universe in a different light and see its interconnectedness to them and their surroundings.Thank you for thinking about joining the Gateway Science Center family.
